It’s long past time to stop chasing after highly-competitive, highly-generalized keywords. The mindset used to be that more search traffic was always better – even if that traffic was largely irrelevant to your business or website.

Today, we’re much more concerned with driving highly-relevant, highly-targeted traffic. Visitors who are actually looking for what we offer and who are likely to buy what we’re selling. This is why it’s so important to focus on long-tail keywords. Long-tail phrases are less popular and thus easier to rank for, and the best part is that they more closely match the intent of the user.

Using diverse yet descriptive anchor text is good; using the same anchor text again and again isn’t. Google needs to see a natural link profile, not one that’s been carefully planned and built solely as a means of ranking for certain keywords.

Write an interesting press release and use links back to your website with keyword-rich anchor text. By submitting such PRs to different publications, you could build numerous links to your site, thereby enhancing your search rankings.

Guest blogging alone as a means to build links is a piece of old SEO strategies. Submitting guest posts to random websites – no matter if those websites are relevant to your targeted audience – is not just a waste of time, but it can be detrimental to your website and brand all in all.
