MLS, nowadays, is hiking towards new things, be it new clubs, new media partnerships, new stars, new stadiums,… or a new logo. Yes! You heard that right… The highly popular domestic league in American football history will throw its 20th season in 2015, and that survival alone is a big reason to be proud of. In order to celebrate, MLS has put out its new logo, a crest which will be gradually rolled out by the end of this year and properly launched in the next January. The legendary soccer cleat and ball logo design is gone after almost 20 years in existence.
It’s, in fact, the 6th logo in this league’s history, but the 1st one to drop the “kick” motif which was seen for the initial 19 years. Below is the detailed analysis of this new logo:
WORDMARK: MLS intends Major League Soccer.
SLASH: It refers to the soccer’s speed and the energy. It starts from outside the perimeter and moves upward at a 45-degree angle so as to illustrate both the constant nature of the game in addition to the growing trajectory of the league. It intersects the crest to make a “first half” & “second half.”
STARS: The 3 stars stand for the pillars of the brand, i-e., The Club, The Country, The Community.
PERIMETER: The perimeter signifies the lines that measure off the field of play.
1stHALFAND 2nd HALF: The first half comprises of MLS and the three stars. Whereas, the second one is an open white space which brings viewers in and out of MLS sphere.
The new one is not the best, but a good effort. It’s simple, clean, and fairly professional. It’s also flexible and customizable. In fact, every MLS club will put on a distinct version of the logo on their kits opening in 2015, however in the club’s primary colors.
Anyways, we wish best to luck to all the team playing the league, the new stars introduced this season, the league itself for the innovation it brought in terms of its logo design as well as for the season they are going to hold.
